Soundtrack Review: Be Kind Rewind

I’m just jaded I suppose but when I saw the preview for this film my first thought was “do people really rent VHS anymore?”

Besides berating myself for being an elitist bastard (a badge of honor in some circles) my other thought was that this one really probably wouldn’t find the audience beyond the art houses and might do better when it hits rental. Jerry (Jack Black) and Mike (Mos Def) find the local video rental shop’s tapes erased thanks to Jerry, so Mike enlists him in refilming all the movies that they’ve erased with their camcorder. Against all odds the odd couple turns out to be the hit of the neighborhood until those pesky devils from the FBI (you’ve seen that warning on the front of the tapes) show up to shut down their good times. I also wondered if this was a period piece since the concept of the film seems like something you find on YouTube on a daily basis. The soundtrack does feature some good tunes including the infectious “Nothing from Nothing” by Billy Preston, Mos Def remaking some Fats Waller (“Your Feets too Big”) and including the original tune, and yes if you must know you get Jack Black’s Ghostbusters theme tune that’s featured prominently in the trailers. It does look like a cute movie and I enjoyed the soundtrack.
